Excess and Security Deposit from Mallorca Moto Rent Ducati MMR22

Excess and Security Deposit: Let's clarify

EXCESS and SECURITY DEPOSIT for a DUCATI rented from Mallorca Moto Rent Ducati MMR22:

Let's clarify?
The EXCESS in the rental contract is the amount that the customer undertakes, by signing the same, to pay in the event of damage to the motorbike due to causes attributable to the customer himself. Let us give a few examples:
Damage caused to the vehicle as a result of accidents attributable to the customer. This can be accidents with other vehicles involved, damage from falls, damage from improper parking, vandalism in general suffered by the vehicle. This damage also covers all equipment and accessories supplied with the motorbike at the time of hire.
The amount of the deductible may vary from rental company to rental company, type of vehicle, and value of the rented vehicle. Usually, the amount of the deductible charged to the customer corresponds to the amount charged to the hire company by the insurance companies. In Spain in the motorbike rental sector unfortunately there are no insurance companies that take out all-risk policies with a zero excess, so the motorbike rental company is forced to apply this in turn. Many companies, especially scooter rental companies, waive the deductible by charging a premium. It will be clear to everyone that a scooter worth a few thousand euro cannot be compared to a high-end motorbike (Ducati).
In car rentals the situation is completely different, insurances are less strict due to less risk and it is easier for renters to offer contracts without a excess requirement but be careful: always read the conditions, even the small print. Often the excess is still due but the security deposit is zero.
At this point we rent our Ducati motorbike in the knowledge that we are liable for a maximum amount equal to the excess. Even if the damage is greater, the customer will pay up to a maximum amount equal to the excess. There are some exceptions (also reported in the regulations of our site) for which the customer will be 100% liable for all damages caused to the vehicle, both direct and indirect. These relate to accidents caused by: driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication or psychotropic substances. Driving recklessly, improperly, altering or modifying the motorbike. Driving without a licence or with false documents.
We recommend that you always conduct a thorough inspection of the motorcycle with the hirer and photograph any damage BEFORE collecting the motorcycle.
This amount may seem high to you, but when you consider certain aspects you will realise that this is not the case. The risk of damage to a motorbike is much higher than to a car.
Let's just think of a fall from a standstill perhaps because you haven't put the kickstand on: for high-end motorbikes like our DUCATI, trivial repairs of this kind, a clutch lever, a crank, a bag or an engine guard..... hours of maintenance cost big bucks. Anyone with a high-end motorbike will know what we are talking about. And this does not take into account the transport costs and the most expensive downtime, which remains one of the most important damages.
The SECURITY DEPOSIT represents that amount that is usually blocked on your credit cards when the contract is signed. It represents a form of guarantee on the excess you undertake to pay in the event of damage caused by your negligence. The security deposit does not necessarily have to correspond to the excess. It may well, as in our case, be less than the excess and also vary depending on the type and value of the motorbike. A credit card is usually required because: the amount is blocked on the card and not collected. No fees are charged and the money remains on the customer's account even though it is blocked. Remember that the card often requires a PIN code. When the motorbike is returned, if there is no evidence of damage to the motorbike, equipment or accessories, if it has been properly filled, the security deposit is released in our case (MMR22) IMMEDIATELY.
We will provide you with a receipt of release before greetings and thanks. Security deposits can also be paid in cash or with Debit Cards. We are reluctant to accept cash deposits for obvious reasons, and the use of Debit Cards sometimes generates real bank transactions subject to fees.
And in case of damage? In the event of damage, the security deposit is retained. The damaged motorbike is taken to the official dealer (Ducati) who will provide an estimate. Based on this estimate, MMR22 will issue a regular invoice to the customer (enclosing the official Ducati estimate). The amount of the invoice will be deducted from the deposit and the difference will be released and made available to the customer immediately.
To further protect our customers, we always suggest supplementing your travel insurance by adding coverage for the loss of the Motorcycle Rental Excess. It costs a few euros per day and covers up to €3,000. Unfortunately, we cannot take this out as it is a personal insurance policy and must be taken out directly by the renter.

Final considerations. The Excess and Security Deposit are not tools we use to try to make a few extra euros at the expense of the customer. Certainly there are cases where less ‘careful’ charterers see this as a source of extra income. This is not our case. For us they represent a small protection that compensates us in part for any damages incurred, which are usually much higher than an excess. Our business is to hire out exceptional motorbikes on the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean so that you can experience your
