DUCATI TESTASTRETTA ENGINE
What is the ‘TESTASTRETTA 11°’ engine that equips some Ducatis?
With the desire to expand the range of its motorbikes and enter the touring sector, Ducati needed to make its sports engines more regular and usable in performance. Engineers and technicians had to create an engine capable of tackling even long journeys while increasing ease of use and riding comfort.
To this end, it was necessary to work on the crossover angle.
The crossover angle is the crankshaft rotation interval during which the intake and exhaust valves are open simultaneously. This occurs at the end of the exhaust phase and the beginning of the intake phase. This interval is measured in degrees.
In sports engines always seeking extreme performance, this angle has high values to maximise volumetric efficiency (41°).
In the TESTASTRETTA engine, these degrees are reduced to 11, minimising the exchange of fresh charge towards the combustion gas exhaust towards the combustion chamber. The result is great smoothness of operation combined with reduced consumption and exhaust emissions.
The TESTASTRETTA results in an engine with greater torque at low revs, very smooth, excellent driveability, lower consumption and lower pollutant emissions.
Naturally, the 11° crossover angle influences the dimensions of the cylinder head, hence the name TESTASTRETTA.
The Ducati motorbikes with the L-twin engine with 4 valves per cylinder, desmodromic distribution (see dedicated article) equipped with Testastretta that you can rent at MMR22, Mallorca Moto Rent 22, are :
