Riding a Ducati motorbike for hire in Majorca with a foreign licence: the rules on licences in Spain
Being one step away from driving on the beautiful streets of Mallorca but not having the right documents, could be a big disappointment: let's clarify!
First we want to explain how it works in Spain.
Any person whose driving permit has been issued by a European country and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) may drive in Spain as long as the licence is valid for the duration of the rental.
The following driving permits from other countries are also valid provided they meet the following criteria:
- Driving permits that are written in Castilian or are accompanied by an official translation.
- Permits issued by third countries will only be valid provided that they comply with the requirements of Article 21 of the General Regulations for Drivers and Annex 9 of the Geneva International Convention of 19 September 1949 on Road Traffic or with Annex 6 of the Vienna International Convention of 8 November 1968.
Therefore, licences must necessarily contain the following information:
1. Surname(s)
2. first name(s)
3. Date and place of birth;
4. a) Date of issue;
4.b) Date of expiry;
4.c) Name or stamp of issuing authority;
5. Licence number
6. Photograph of the holder
7. Signature of the holder;
9. Categories (subcategories) of vehicles for which the licence is valid;
12. Limitations or additional information for each vehicle category (subcategory) in coded form.
If national legislation requires additional information, this must be entered on the licence in accordance with the numbering below:
4.d) identification number for the purpose of registration, other than the number indicated in paragraph 4, number 5;
8. Place of normal residence;
10. Date of issue for each vehicle category (subcategory);
11. Date of expiry for each category (subcategory) of vehicle
13. Information for registration purposes in case of change of country of normal residence
14. Information for registration purposes or other information related to road safety.
If you come from a country outside the European Union or the European Economic Area, we always advise you, before coming, to obtain an international permit in your country. Be careful because this permit is only valid if accompanied by the original driving licence issued by your country of residence!
